Janek, the captain of the Prometheus, he’s an officer in the classic tradition, an alpha male whose primary mission is to protect the ship and its crew?
Idris Elba: Yeah. Captain Janek, he’s the captain of this vessel, this “old sea dog” sort of guy in the classic tradition. He’s an engineer, he‘s got a pretty straightforward job. He works on these huge vessels that do long-haul space trips, that do odd jobs for this company called Weyland. He’s the captain of Prometheus, he‘s like a longshoreman and a sailor. It’s his life and the crew is his responsibility. He has a character and personality that will reveal itself in the film, but his primary purpose on that ship is to fly it and to get it from point A to point B. He’s not really involved in the politics that ensues in the film. Ultimately, he makes a huge decision that sums him up as a man. It was exciting to be a part of ’Prometheus.’ I consider Ridley Scott a masterful filmmaker, he’s great.
Holloway, Shaw’s [Noomi Rapace] partner, both personally and professionally, he has a thirst for answers, but he thinks the end of their search will yield very different results from those Shaw expects?
Logan Marshall-Green: Shaw is the heart of the search, Holloway is the guts. I think Holloway is searching for answers to these huge questions because he’s always pushing the envelope. He goes to the extreme in everything he does, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse of the team. I think what drives him is the thrill of the search.
Guy, your character, Peter Weyland, the CEO and founder of Weyland Corp, without giving too much a way, he has an integral part in this story?
Guy Pearce: Yeah. Peter Weyland, he’s essentially the master of all of these missions. He’s the billionaire, megalomaniac….he’s a man who really thinks outside of the square. A lot of people do that in life, but a lot of people don’t have the facility or the finance to be able to actually act on that. I think if you look at characters like Rupert Murdoch and Richard Branson, businessmen who see the world exists the way that it does, but they think they can add more to that, they can create a world as well – someone who has an empire. Also, believing and trying to understand what it is that created us is his prime objective. I believe he feels that we’ve gotten so close, that we’re getting closer, that it’s actually possible to discover who it is that actually created us.
The visuals and the sets are in the film are startling….
Idris Elba: The production designer has done a phenomenal job of making this world. We took over the 007 stage at Pinewood, which is one of the largest stages in the world – and we OVER-extended it (laughs). The vastness of the set was pretty impressive. There’s so much detail as well. It makes it easy to bring ourselves to life as actprs. Every detail is taken care of and so much of it worked.
How did you find it working with Ridley Scott, particularly on a film this epic on every scale?
Logan Marshall-Green: I’ve never been on something so collaborative, and then on such a scale! Ridley was so intent on making the script great. He cast people who he hopes will help him. That’s one of the great things about Ridley; he just wants you to help him make a great movie. He’s not looking to drive the ship his way, everyday. He’s really hoping you will flesh out the script, these characters and choreograph this dance with him. To make it the best it can be.
How about you Guy?
Guy Pearce: Ridley is definitely a visual director, there’s no doubt about it. He has the most extraordinary vision. He really is able to create worlds that other people can’t, but not at the expense of the actors. He was the most delightful, communicative, respectful actors-directors that I’ve ever come across. It was great speaking to him about Peter Weyland, his ego, his attitude. That’s what I was really interested in rather than the legacy as such, really just understanding the person, the man.
