So I finally got round to viewing the ninety second teaser trailer that prequeled Iron Man 2's midnight screenings on May 7 in the US. This upcoming project, a collaboration/ homage between J.J. Abrams & Steven Spielberg looks very interesting.
The film is called Super 8. The Teaser shows footage reminiscent of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. A pickup truck barrels toward a train and crashes intercut with frames that state: in 1979 the US Air Force closed a section of Area 51. All materials were to be transported to a secure facility in Ohio. The trailer typically Abrams, a master of minimalism. He knows how to heighten perception and create super realities. I don't know of any other director in this genre who as Samuel Taylor Coleridge so eloquently put it "suspends our disbelief" effortlessly.
The film starts shooting this fall for a July 2011 release and will boast a budget of between $45-50 million. Abrams will direct after writing the script with Spielberg as producer.
