Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the main Villain in J.J. Abrams' Untitled Star Trek sequel. The 36 year-old English actor has a TV & film career that dates back a decade, but he is best known for his critically-acclaimed role in hit BBC series Sherlock & can currently be seen in Steven Spielberg's War Horse & the adaptation of John Le Carré's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which opens nationwide this Friday. He's also been cast to portray the dragon Smaug & voice the Necromancer in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit movies. J.J.Abrams' Untitled Star Trek Sequel is set for a May 17th 2013 release. Benicio Del Toro was tapped to play as the main villain in Abrams’ sequel to the 2009 hit. Then Edgar Ramirez & Jordi Molla were under consideration for the same role before Variety confirmed Cumberbatch for the role.
