Disney originally shifted their John Carter of Mars from June 8th 2012 to March 9th 2012, which clashed with 20th Century Fox & Ridley Scott’s Prometheus release date. The problem with releasing a $100+ million dollar sci-fi tentpole film on that date is that Prometheus, is also a heavy hitting sci-fi behemoth. Shall the audience be torn?
John Carter of Mars is based on one John Carter, the lead character in Edgar Rice Burroughs' 11-volume Barsoom series. In a Princess of Mars, the book the film is based on Carter as an American Civil War veteran goes to sleep in a cave after being chased by Apache Indians and wakes up on Mars. I kid you not. So the studios solved the problem by having Prometheus take John Carter’s old spot on June 8th, 2012.
