OSCAR SEASON: [TRON] & [INCEPTION] TO FIGHT IT OUT FOR BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the final 15 contenders for the 2010 Oscar for Best Visual Effects. This is only the first round as they will be cut down to seven by the branch's executive committee in early January, and members of the branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from the shortlisted films on January 20. Then cut down to five final nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards. Eventually, one film will be given the Oscar on February 27 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, hosted by James Franco & Anne Hathaway the youngest hosts in the history of the venerable event.

At this early stage my money is on Inception, knowing the Academies preference for visually groundbreaking advances i.e Avatar, or visual effects that have an integral part of the story, a character as you will not just a pretty picture. More than half the films selected were screened in 3D. The nominees will be announced with the full Oscar nominations on January 25.
