Carey Mulligan has been officially confirmed as Baz Luhrmann's top choice to play Daisy in his adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Deadline confirmed after speaking directly to the director who also released a screen test photo of Mulligan as Daisy. This confirmed earlier rumors that the director was set to drop Rebecca Hall from playing Daisy. Luhrmann called to give Mulligan the good news while she was walking the red carpet at the Fashion Council Awards, causing her to burst into tears in front of the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour.
Luhrmann stated:
"There are a few elements that I feel need to be resolved before I would categorically state that this is my next film. Regarding the role of Daisy Buchanan, I was privileged to explore the character with some of the world's most talented actresses, each one bringing their own particular interpretation, all of which were legitimate and exciting. However, specific to this particular production of The Great Gatsby, I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: "Hello, Daisy Buchanan."
The Great Gatsby project has thus far been running workshops with Leonardo Di Caprio & Tobey Maguire and I cannot see eithier of them being dropped.
