DAVID DUCHOVNY SAYS [X-FILES 3] SCRIPT IS UNDERWAY

According to an interview with David Duchovny published in France’s TMag today, a script for a new X-Files movie is “in the process of being written.” Who knows where in that process this is, but it’s good news that progress might be happening since the second film The X-Files: I Want to Believe underperformed pretty badly and a sequel didn’t seem too certain.

Duchovny stated:

“It is in the process of being written. One awaits just the green light from Fox, a little disappointed from the relatively poor reception of the second film.” [The film grossed $20.8 million.] “The error comes, in my opinion, that the authors strayed too far from the roots of the series. Moreover, the film was released in the summer. The third will be much closer to what the public expects, with government conspiracies, etc.”
If they’re going that route, making the movie about alien colonization in 2012 seems like a likely choice, since that was the one thing that happened in the series finale that wasn’t lame. I’d like to see how the conspiracy stuff would play out since Cigarette Smoking Man is apparently dead, the FBI is now staffed by the likes of Xzibit, the Lone Gunmen are dead, and Mulder is basically a hobo in hiding who spends his days cutting newspapers and growing a terrible beard.  Don’t get your hopes up, but it would be awesome if this movie actually happened and was legitimately great.
