Edward Zwick's Love & Other Drugs has been getting a lot of attention recently, but mostly via its heavy marketing and promotion emphasizing its R-rating. Based on Jamie Reidy's non-fiction title Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman. The Movie opens Wednesday, Anne Hathaway plays a feisty alluring free spirit who won't let anyone or anything tie her down but she is burdened with premature onset Parkinson's disease. She dabbles and battles with Jake Gyllenhaal, the Viagra-shilling drug rep, whose charm serves him well with the ladies in the cutthroat world of pharmaceutical sales. Sex is the way the pair best communicates. Both spend fair chunks of the movie stark naked.
You may be forgiven for thinking the romantic comedy is just straight-up porn. Well we wouldn't be covering it: "I spent weeks and weeks naked with Jake Gyllenhaal and they paid me," Hathaway said on Chelsea Lately. But, "We decided from the get-go that real sex was out. We watched some films that do real sex, and that makes me feel weird. There are some films where the actors really have sex." But not this one. "Of course, my instinct was omigosh, I'm going to be naked, I want to be in awesome shape but I was basically beholden to the Parkinson's meds as to how my body was going to look," she explains. "I will admit I'm vain and it was a relief that they make you very skinny." [Radar]
